| Katie Holmes Biography, a little bit about Katie Holmes Kate Noelle "Katie" Holmes (born December 18, 1978) is an American actress from Ohio best known for her role as Joey Potter, the tomboy down the titular waterway on The WB television drama Dawson's Creek. Only her second role, Dawson's Creek made Holmes a star, praised by critics and adored by fans. Holmes' movie roles have ranged from art films such as Pieces of April to thrillers such as Abandon, but she has not found the same success in films as she did on television. Holmes hit the big time in 1998 as Josephine "Joey" Potter on the coming-of-age TV series Dawson's Creek. (Joey was the best chum and sometime love interest for Dawson, played by James Van Der Beek; the show ended its run in 2003.) Holmes parlayed her TV fame into roles including The Ice Storm (1997, with Tobey Maguire), Go (1999), and the academic dramedy Wonder Boys (2000, with Michael Douglas). In 2005 she co-starred with Christian Bale in the big summer movie Batman Begins. In June of the same year she became engaged to actor Tom Cruise after a much-publicized courtship and a proposal from Cruise at the Eiffel Tower.
